Everyone around you is busy making money by using internet optimally. You already have a brick and mortar business successfully going for you. You just want to test the waters and find out how it would be to have an online presence. Imagine the neighboring town logging in to find out what’s available in the ‘next town’ that they would source from. Viola you have what they want and yet your budget does not permit to run a full blown marketing blitzkrieg elsewhere. What to do?

Your path to nirvana can be chartered by using simple DIY techniques; all you need is a computer. Google search or any other search engine you are comfortable with to find out where and what your potential customer is looking for. You can mark your online presence by using methods such as keyword research.

The things you should be concerned with are:

• The keywords people use to search for your business category
• The profitability of the keyword that you finally choose
• Ultimately, utilizing the keywords within your online campaign

Here’s the how of doing keyword research and its profitability:

Keyword Research –

Searching for correct keywords relevant to your industry/category is the clincher in a successful online marketing campaign. By using the keyword within the website and if possible for the site name, the chances of figuring high on search engine pages are very high. For example an organic shop that is on the lookout for an online presence can first search for keywords like organic food within the food and groceries category. Within the advanced filters they can add geographical area they wish to cater to. The keyword research on the Google keyword research tool should look like this:

The search category being broad the results come up with various keywords like: organic food stores, what is organic food, organic food bars, organic food delivery, online organic food & so on. (Please note that the image does not show all search results due to space restrictions!) By selecting the keywords that best suit your category (star them to save them in an excel sheet for future use), you can focus on using them in your campaigns.

Keyword Profitability –

Alright now that you have finalized the keyword/s, you need to find out how to monetize them; after all the purpose of the whole exercise was profitability or Return over Investment.

Keyword profitability is the amount that the keyword would generate by attracting the potential traffic and its conversion ratio. A website generates traffic either/and from organic search results or from paid ads like PPC. The keywords play a pivotal role in the kind of traffic that comes to the website. Really niche keywords in low competitive category will attract a niche category traffic thus resulting in greater profitability margins.

Estimated traffic can be measured by multiplying the search volume in exact terms with 0.6. The results are the ones you are targeting to figure on the topmost pages of the search engine. Then estimate an average conversion rate, say for example 8 – 10 percent. These percentages could vary depending upon the type of product or service you are offering.

Now multiply the conversion (estimated) percentage with the amount of traffic generated and you have the potential sales figures. The next step would be to multiply the sales by average CPC within the keyword research tool to arrive at the profit per day.

The same formula can be applied to find out which keyword offers the best ROI!

Importance of Keyword Research Profitability-
Profitability is measureable. However to arrive at the correct estimates (no one can guarantee profitability!), you have to get your keyword research bang on. Budget and time constraints might restrict you from using paid tools. However free online tools are really good indicators of who is searching what using which keyword/s.

Dig out information from a variety of sources like social media, panel discussions, online forums, blogs/articles and other search engine keyword research tools like AdSense & WordTracker. The process is a continuous one as keywords keep evolving along with the search engine algorithms. By adapting and renovating your strategies you will end up with a formidable list of keywords that are not only profitable in the long run, but are market leaders in their own way.
